Editorial Reviews:

In Resident Evil 4 you'll know a new type of horror, as the classic survival-horror action returns with all-new characters, controls and storylines. We last saw Leon S. Kennedy in Resident Evil 2 - a rookie cop in Raccoon City, fighting to stay alive. That was six years ago. Since then, government forces have managed to control the zombie threat and Leon has become a Federal agent. When the President's daughter is kidnapped, Leon tracks her to a remote, hidden fortress in Europe - where he'll relive the horror he faced six years before. Players will face never-before-seen enemies that make Nemesis seem like a kitten. You'll be wishing for the usual Resident Evil zombies!

Summary: Simply put, a masterpiece.
Comment: I'll keep it concise:

RE4 takes many of the best elements of multiple genres and combines them into a tense, compelling, addictive, challenging, and gratifyingly gory experience. I'm actually buying a Gamecube so I can play this game (own a PC and Xbox 360 currently) -- it's that good.

If you're not bothered by violence in your video games, then grab this one. It's masterfully made and could easily provide a hundred hours of gameplay if you get into the mini-games and special unlockables.

I've played a LOT of games on many consoles... trust me when I say that this is one of the select few that any gamer MUST experience! It's worth the investment to get a GameCube or PS2 if only to be able to play this game. Seriously. It's awesome.

The only downside is that once you've played a game like this, you'll be a little dissatisfied with almost anything you play afterward. Your standards for a 'great game' will be irreversibly raised.

Comment: I can't decide which I like best. This RE or the remade original for the GC. Oh well who cares. I'll just keep playing them both. Great Game. Makes owning a Nintendo worth it.

Summary: Leon Saves Ashley... Again... and Again.
Comment: So I'm not much of a gamer. This review might be useless to the die hard gamers who obviously loved this game, but I think it might appeal to casual fans of gaming. I've played my fair share of video games, both sensationally senseless fun ones and more serious ones like this, so I think I'll be able to give this a fair rating.

THE GAME: Very easy gameplay. The control one has over shooting, slashing, and walking is very comfortable and realistic. The areas are expansive, which is good if you plan on playing multiple times. One will definitely develop more familiarity with each of the levels each time they replay, but I thought that the maps were a bit complex and confusing to totally get the first time. Again, that added to the realism but it also brought the fun factor down a bit when you're wandering aimlessly looking for the next place to go. Overall, the boss battles were fair. The majority of them were hard enough to challenge you, but not hard enough to get you cursing and giving up. Because if you can't beat 'em, but go to the dude with the blue torch and get a rocket launcher. Indeed, the blue torch guy is a merchant who sells guns, health, maps, and carrying space, and he comes in very handy. Those guys as well as save points are spread out fairly. While I felt the game could have been shorter--the initial outdoor area dragged on for entirely too long--it was a good and obviously well thought out experience.

STORY: It's a bit shabby. It's less about zombies and more about a crazy cult with many monsters and more ambition, which is of course more epic, but the general plot left a lot to be desired. The majority of the game is looking for Ashley, finding her, getting her taken away, looking for her again, finding her, etc. The various villains add a bit of spice, but it was a bit cheesy that there were so many Major Villains that were set up to be the Big Boss before the real Big Boss was revealed. Again, it just seemed like things could have been tightened to make the story better. Also, the dialogue? Sad fact, someone got paid to write that atrocious dialogue.

COMPARED TO OTHER "RESIDENT EVIL" GAMES: Much better. Less monotony, more variety. While I missed the more personal creepiness of walking through a scary house infected with zombies, this is definitely a better game.

COMPARED TO ALL VIDEO GAMES: Fair. Not as ground-breakingly great as some of the reviews I've read say, but definitely still a game worth your time.

7/10

Summary: A Most Cohesive Experience
Comment: Resident Evil 4 shuns some of the frustrating mechanics of previous RE games in favor of pure adventure gameplay. The plot is decent and the enemies memorable, but the real draw of the game is its ability to draw you forward. Each section of the game is a setpiece, meaning that each level, populated with original enemies and memorable scripted events lingers in the memory long after you play it. Upgrading your weapons and equipment is addictive and finding strategies to conserve ammo is a must and quite enjoyable. The experience is loaded with minigames and bonus games. Probably my favorite single-player experience of all time.
