Editorial Reviews:

Say hello to the Palm Treo 680 smartphone. It's your phone along with email, messaging, and web access. Not to mention your contacts, calendar, photos, and songs. Sounds like a lot. And it is. But everything's so easy to learn that you'll actually use it, which makes it anything but a typical phone. The same goes for design. Pick it up and you'll notice a large color touch screen and an easy-type keyboard. Since the Treo 680 is just the right size, you have the freedom to take it anywhere and still be connected to friends, work, and family. Of course, there's also something called an "off" button, for when you don't want to be connected at all.

Summary: Hardware sucks / on my 4th treo
Comment: I have had treo 600, 650 and now 680. This has the best OS on the market and touch screen is awesome. Through all the treos over 5+ years, I can say besides the high usability, the hardware SUCKS !! All treos have mediocre reception, highly prone to dropped calls, self reboots; weird behaviors like rebooting when switching calls between active and call waiting and if the inactive caller hangs up, then the phone will reboot; yada yada.

My latest gripe with my new tro 680 started when a known common problem hit me, i.e. the phone jack circuit was loose, so no matter if I am using the phone jack or not, people can't hear me and I can't hear them.. So i sent the phone back for repair (under warranty).. after a long 10 day wait, I was given another refurbished unit which refused to charge when plugged in to the 680 charger. The charger glow light came on, but it looked like its charging, but wasn't... so here we go, sent this replacement unit back .. Palm wanted to charge me $25 for an advance exchange even though they sent me a bad unit... So waited another 10 days with no response.. When I called them, kept getting their call center in India who don't know the status, but they just want me to wait another day.. Had the issue escalated and finally had to yell at them to let me talk to their US counter parts.. Sadly, things were not any better their either .. Again I got the standard answer that they are "escalating" but do not have a current status..

Today I see in their online status that the status is marked shipped; though fedex doesn't recognize the tracking..

So overall I have been without my phone for almost 4 weeks now.. What can I say, I have been a faithful treo customer for years and I have put up with all kind of hardware problems before with every single unit I had.. and this is the thanks I get.. Piss poor service ! .. Looking at the new Nokia E71 now..

Summary: So awful I stopped making phone calls
Comment: I knew it was bad but I didn't realize how bad it was until I switched over to a Blackberry phone this week and it was like the sun coming out.I had literally stopped making phone calls because of the difficulty and frustration. Palm 680s have these issues:

1) Standby battery life less than 8 hours, even IF you don't use Bluetooth, shut off the automatic date/time sensing function, and install the so-called "patches." You need to carry a recharger EVERYWHERE. You become a junkie looking for a plug.

2) Random shut-downs in the middle of use: you need to re-boot 3-6x per day. Usually in the middle of an important call.

3) Search function from hell. Want to find someone's phone number? it doesn't search by first name OR last name, it searches your entire database looking for the occurrence of a certain sequence of letters... this takes FOREVER! Just to dial a number!

4) Bad interface design causes way too many clicks and screens to accomplish common tasks. Just connecting to your wireless headset (required for driving) takes 13 (thirteen!!) keyboard commands! Each time you turn it on!

Is someone out there from Palm listening? GET A BLACKBERRY.

Summary: Horrible Product, Awful Support
Comment: Do not buy a Palm product. My original phone broke within the warranty period; they sent me a "refurbished" phone. They took my broken phone then sent me someone elses broken phone.

When you have an issue, you are dealing with people in the Phillipines.

Don't believe me? Go ahead and buy one....

Summary: My first... will never forget it!!!
Comment: This is my first smart phone. Was a little concern about the battery life and with the new Centro that came out... but money spoke louder for the first try.
I love this Treo!!! As a Mac user, always use Palm (two T5s and one TX). Now I thought that the catch would be that because I'm in Africa it would not work. As soon as it got here, I place my sync card on it and turned it on....Fantastic!! It works perfectly!!
The sound is great, I have no calling cuts and the camera really impressed me. The size wasn't to bad and the screen is crystal clear, specially with the sun here. Type messages is great and fun...so easy to use and set up!!
The only draw for this unit is the SD port, seems cheap and feels like is going to brake every time I open it, that's when bluetooth comes handy.
Just plugged on my Mac and works normally as a hand held. I got one extra battery from Palm and will have it around in case that it needs, but so far, I have two or three days between charges.
I love it!! Smartphone is the way to go!! In few months, my wife will get one too!!!!
