Customer Rating: Summary: A bit dated, but a durable performer Comment: I've had this for a little over a year, and use it while exercising outdoors. It's taken a real beating - dropped it several times, gets wet in the rain/snow, and so on. But, it just keeps on working! Got to love a product that can take a punch.
Reception is pretty good - can pick up several stations quite clearly, and a few more with some static. Sound quality is decent. You won't mistake it for CD-quality, but it's radio, after all. Battery life is very good - goes a few months on an AAA. I just switched to rechargeable batteries, but even with regular alkalines it's pretty cost effective.
The only downside I've encountered was the headphones. Found them to be very uncomfortable, and replaced them very soon after purchasing with a set of ear buds (not sure of the brand - perhaps Sony as well).
It's not as flexible as a MP3 player but I find the radio reception on this to be far better than the reception on my MP3 player that has an FM tuner. Yes, a conventional FM radio is a bit dated, but then again, so am I - sometimes it's nice to just listen to the radio. For the price, this is a great performer.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Radio- sketchy packaging Comment: This ended up being even smaller than I had pictured it. It's an amazing radio (no speaker, which is obvious, but just an FYI). So tiny- and I love the idea of digital tuning. Manual can be a big pain. The headphones were really old school, like the ones from the old sony walkman. I just used my ipod headphones or my computer headphones, and they were much more compact. The only weird part was the packaging. It's not manufacturer packaging, but it came on a cardboard backing wrapped in plastic. Kind of sketchy if you ask me. This makes me think there isn't any manufacturer warranty, but it works great, and is pretty cheap for all it has (including the sony name). Highly recommend (my boyfriend loved it!!)
Customer Rating: Summary: Not a good receiver Comment: I have this radio for two years now and I am so tired of it. I use it for my daily walks and the receiver is the worse I have ever had. Also the touch bottons are very sensitive and you cannot avoid touching them by mistake anytime you move!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great little radio Comment: I needed a basic AM/FM portable radio to compliment my iPod. I like to listen to the local morning radio show on my bike ride and then my iPod after that. This suited me perfectly.
Customer Rating: Summary: Will not receive ditigal TV transmissions!!! Comment: NOTE: The product title doesn't mention TV channels, but the product description does.
I have had this radio for about 18 months and based on my past and present use, would have rated it 4 or 5 stars. I use it at work to listen to the radio and, most often, the audio portion of TV programs.
But with all the ads about television channels all going digital early next year, I wondered whether my little radio would still be able to receive TV broadcasts. So I emailed the Sony customer service and got this reply: "I understand that you want to know if your Sony Walkman receives digital TV signals. As your Walkman has analog tuner, it can not receive digital signals after the transmission changes to digital." I am quite disappointed.
So, if you are thinking of buying this radio so you can listen to TV broadcasts, you need to know it will not work for that after the transmissions go digital early in 2009. It is still a nice little radio to take to the gym or on walks, but there are many nice little radios and some MP3 players also receive FM channels. I hope Sony or another company comes out with a product that will receive the digital TV transmissions.
