A lot of folks said it would never happen, but here it is: a Palm device running Windows Mobile software. This isn't just any device, either. It's the latest version of Palm's wildly popular Treo series of Smartphones. Everything that's great about the Treo hardware is here, plus all the power of Windows Mobile 5.0. And to top it off, the Treo 700wx is fully compatible with Verizon wireless' EV-DO mobile broadband data service. Simply put, everything you need to do your work on the move, and at blazing speeds, has arrived.

Based upon the venerable 700w platform, the Treo 700wx Verizon Wireless phone features double the operating memory capacity of the 700w, effectively solving a few minor usability issues of the 700w. With added RAM, the Treo 700wx is for the on-the-go person who uses a more robust set of applications on a more regular basis.

An integrated application captures and organizes your photos and videos.
Under the hood, the Treo 700wx features 128 MB of RAM (60 MB available for end user storage) and an Intel XScale 312MHz processor. The design retains the same basic form factor as the Treo 650 with a few changes. Aesthetically, the new Treo has more angular lines and a more professional-looking gray color. At 6.0-ounces, it's also slightly lighter than its predecessor. The button layout above the full QWERTY keyboard has been changed to accommodate the Windows Mobile 5.0 interface, and the screen sports 240 x 240 resolution.

Like the 650, the top of the 700wx features an expansion card slot for SD, SDIO, and MMC memory and expansion cards, and get this: Unlike the 650, the 700wx supports the Palm Wi-Fi card. Up top there's also an infrared port for line of sight data transfers, as well as a handy switch for turning off the phone's ringer. Below the screen, a five-way navigator controls most of the phone's menus and operating system functions. The left side of the unit features a volume up/down toggle plus a handy user-customizable button that can be assigned to any phone or PDA function. The rear of the unit houses a loudspeaker, as well as the 1.3-megapixel camera unit. A touchscreen stylus can be tucked away on the right side of the phone. Meanwhile, a combined charging, data, and accessory attachment port, called the Palm "multi-connector" is housed on the bottom of the unit, as is a standard 2.5 mm stereo headset jack.

Calling and PDA Features
Like the Treo 650, the Treo 700wx's phone and PDA functions are designed to provide an integrated, seamless experience--only this time it's all handled by Windows Mobile. The hallmark of the Windows Mobile experience is the "Today" screen that summarizes all the important information you need to make it through the day. Here you'll get message notification, upcoming appointments, dialing functions, and a Google Web searching all in one spot. As a phone, the Treo 700wx features all the functionality folks expect from a cell phone, including a handsfree speakerphone, polyphonic ringtones (polyphonic MIDI, MP3, WAV and video ringtones are supported), a vibrate mode, and picture caller ID. Microsoft Office Outlook Mobile combines email, calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes into a single application that seamlessly integrates with the 700wx's phone functions. Meanwhile, headsets, car kits and other wireless peripherals can also be paired with the unit via Bluetooth (the Bluetooth 1.2 specification is supported).

Staying productive on the road is made possible by the Microsoft Office Mobile suite, which includes Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, and PowerPoint Mobile. You also get the Picsel PDF Viewer for viewing PDF document attachments, and the File Explorer application makes it easy to browse the files on your 700wx.

Messaging and Internet
The really big news about the 700wx is that it supports Verizon's BroadbandAccess high speed wireless data service, allowing you to get DSL speeds wherever you have broadband data coverage. And what can you do with all that speed? Surf the Web faster than ever before using the bundled Internet Explorer application, or log into Pocket MSN and check your Hotmail, use MSN Messenger, or browse the MSN Mobile portal. Robust SMS and MMS functionality is built into the Windows Mobile interface, too.

One of the most important tools bundled with the 700wx is Microsoft ActiveSync, which allows you to quickly synchronize your device's tasks, calendars, email, and contacts with your desktop. You also get Exchange ActiveSync, an application that lets you synchronize data with an Exchange server. Syncing can be done via USB, or wirelessly via Bluetooth.

Imaging and Entertainment
Another great feature of the 700wx is that it supports Windows Media playback right out of the box. With Windows Media Player 10, Palm users can finally play streaming and downloaded video and audio content in a variety of formats, even purchased music from "Plays For Sure" supporting stores. You can also keep your tunes loaded on a memory card and listen to stereo sound wherever you roam (requires an optional stereo headset adapter).

The Treo 700wx's built-in camera sees a bump in performance with the ability to take 1.3-megapixel (1280x1024) stills. The camera also features a 2x digital zoom, a self portrait mirror, and automatic light balancing. While the camera is great for taking stills, it can also function as a camcorder, allowing you to capture MPEG4 video to the unit's memory. An integrated media application organizes your captured photos and videos.

And last, but certainly not least, the Treo 700wx keeps the fun going when you've got some downtime with great games. Bubble Breaker and Solitaire ship with the handset, but more Windows Mobile games are available.

Suggested Service Options
To get the most from the Treo 700wx, you'll need to choose two additional service features on top of a voice plan. First, consider a Verizon BroadbandAccess plan, which also includes lower-speed data access in areas where broadband service is not available. If you are a frequent SMS or MMS messaging user, it's a good idea to get an Unlimited IN messaging plan to avoid pay-per-message charges. It runs on the CDMA 800/CDMA 1900 frequencies, as well as the EV-DO and 1xRTT data frequencies. The phone comes with a one year limited warranty. Summary: Bad Phone - Do NOT Buy!
Comment: Cannot agree more with the Dec. 2007 one-star review from RJL.

I have had this phone for 6 months now; was a previous Blackberry user but changed companies. At first the phone seems great with all the features, particularly the touch screen (v Blackberry). However, it constantly jams, drops calls, or just freezes up. It can't hold a charge more than 24 hrs and at least once a day I have to "reboot" and remove the batter just to unjam it.

My advice - stick with a Blackberry. This is one terrible device.

Summary: To know my Palm is to love it
Comment: Over the last 9 years, I've had two PDA models (Palm Handspring and HP 2100) and was very satisfied with both, as well as half a dozen different types of phones with mixed reviews. When I became aware of the 700wx, which would combine the Palm PDA with Windows platform AND cell svc, I couldn't wait to try it. (My wife threatened to divorce me if I used all the upgrade money for the device, and gosh, I'll miss her....)

Having worked through several personal cell svc issues, as well as working for a major carrier, I have a fairly clear picture of how the various networks work, and folks, face it; dropped calls are not going away anytime soon. With everyone and their brother (and their brother's cousins neighbor's paperboys grandmother) having a cell phone, various markets are going to get, and stay, saturated until the carrier can find a way to better handle the call volume.

As far as bluetooth issues, I'll quote Gary Coleman: "Wha ju talkin' 'bout Willis?" I'd done a fair amount of research prior to buying, and my phone links and unlinks from my car's bluetooth system automatically (due to my having the settings set for it to do that...), so I never have to worry about juggling the phone while I'm on the road.

The ONLY reason I didn't give the device a full 5-star rating is: there's very little in this world that's perfect, so my 4 (4.5 if you'll permit me) is as close to a 5-star as any product would get.

So, for those of you who aren't getting the kind of satisfaction you're looking for, I'd classify you into one of three categories:
1) The area you live in is the problem and you'll have to live with dropped calls (or plan your calls around peak call times).
2) You aren't very knowledgable about devices and need to spend more time with the user manual to maximize your device's performance, or
3) You're a flippin' perfectionist wanker who expects the world delivered on a silver platter before lunchtime, and you need to wake up and stop driving yourself (and those around you, most likely) to the nearest loony bin. If you're in management, be careful about any food or drink provided by those you manage; you've probably been on their hit list for a WHILE....

Summary: Terrible Bluetooth Performance!!! Verizon Replaced 4 Times!!!
Comment: I owned the Treo 700WX for about 6 months and for the first 4 months it performed ok. At about the four month period, the phone began to lock up and the only way to reset it was to remove the battery and power-up the phone. After being forced to do this several times, I returned the phone to Verizon. Verizon sent me 4 different treos over a 2 month period...all with similar issues. I finally became fed up and switched to the Blackberry Curve. I am extremely happy with the Curve!!!! I will never purchase another Treo product.

Also, as a side note, I never knew how bad the bluetooth connectivity on the Treo was until I owned the blackberry. I have never lost bluetooth connectivity with the Blackberry but the Treo frequently lost connection to my headset.

I would not recommend the Treo. Too many other reliable options out there!

Good luck on your search!!!

Summary: Worst phone ever
Comment: I on my third Palm 700wx in 9 months. I am done with this phone now and I am moving onto the Iphone. Problems:

1) poor bluetooth connectivity. Always loses the signal and sometimes won't even connect at all.
2) this is the newest problem - it now says that it has "no service" on the phone constantly. It won't dial and won't receive texts, but it will get on the internet.
3) activesync - for the first 6 months I had the phone I had nothing but problems even after installing the program updates for the phone. I kept getting connectivity error messages and not even my IT people at work could figure out the problem. Palm sent me two replacement phones over that period. The third one seems to be finally be working, although there are intermittent connection problems with my server at work. Sometimes the emails won't "push" to the phone.
4) This phone is always freezing even though I have closed all running applications. It takes like 3 min sometimes for the phone to find a number in my contacts. It's just plain slow. God forbid if I ever ahd to make a really important life-saving phone call, because this thing would surely freeze. I put an SD card in thinking that would solve the problem, but it hasn't. I am continuously doing soft resets but those don't really work. I have had to do a hard reset at least 9 times in 9 months. It's very frustrating losing all my information all the time. Thank god most of it is on my computer and I can just re-sync it.
5) Calendar - there is no word wrap, so you can't see the entire heading on the calendar. You have to put most of the info in the notes section.

I am not the only one that has these problems. My office bought these Palm 700wx phones for the employees in the office. 4/4 phones have had problems. We have all had problems with the active sync and with the phone freezing. Palm has had to replace each of our phones at least once. One person couldn't stand it anymore and switched over to the iphone. She loves it. I think the rest of us will follow.

Do not buy this phone unless you want to constantly have interruptions and be ont he phone with tech support all the time.

Summary: A great Smartphone - know what you're buying
Comment: I'm surprised at some of the reviews here for this phone. I wonder if some people expect perfection, or don't know the best way to use the phone. I was given a new one (from a generous friend in the industry) so luckily it cost me nothing, but it was replacing a first generation Motorola Q that I would have paid to get rid of. THAT is a horrible smartphone.

While I didn't pay for this 700wx, I certainly would have. With Windows Mobile, it easily connects to Exchange, and with the 1.22 Palm update and Audio Patch (a bit annoying to have to do, but very easy to install), the phone has been flawless.

I searched high and low for a phone most people liked. It seemed there was no good solution, but I've had this about a week now, and have found it to be by far, the best smartphone I've had in terms of ease of use, performance, and erally great Palm upgrades and tweaks to the Windows Mobile OS, making it feel somewhat "blackberry like" when typing.

I wonder if dome people are confusing the 700wx with the 700w or even the 700p (which has the Palm OS, not WM).
